    Zuke soup

    By Kat / September 3, 2023
A large, red Dutch oven pot filled with simmering zucchini meatball soup.

The zukes came on time on and they’ve never left, so I’ve had them all season. I decided to make some zucchini meatball soup on a surprise chilly summer day, and then I had it for the next few days which turned out to be gray, too, with the same storm front. I adore following the weather with my food…

    A volunteer!

    By Kat / August 28, 2023
A vibrant green squash plant growing from a crack in the concrete.

Volunteer plants are amazing! It’s always exciting to find out a plant has chosen my garden to be its home. I’ve had tomatoes, squash, borage, marjoram, and many others show up where I least expected them (and definitely didn’t plant them). By Kat / August 18, 2023
A white bowl filled with scrambled eggs, cherry tomatoes, radishes and Swiss chard.

Taking two weeks off was great for me, but it exposed a weakness of mine: breakfast. On weekdays I often settle for a piece of toast with peanut butter or a few bites of yogurt and granola, but it’s not enough for how much big brain work I do. I know myself well enough to know that I need more…

    Mischief melon’d

    By Kat / August 17, 2023
A small, half-eaten melon sitting on bark chips.

Apparently, the dog loves unripe baby melons. If I’d had any idea, I wouldn’t have encouraged him to pick this tiny growth up like a ball. It was kind of rough to watch this get eaten, honestly… I hope there’s at least some good nutritional value there for him!
