Sunflower

Sunflowers are totally new to me. I’ve never really been around them, I just know I appreciate that I’m not allergic to their seeds and they make a great substitute for nuts in many recipes.

This year was apparently just not a great one for flowers–my parents’ dahlia farm suffered, and so did everyone else’s sunflowers and other water-hungry blooms.

But I got this one solitary sunflower with a zillion heads, and I love everything about it. It’s the survivor amongst a batch of 72 (!!!!) I tried to plant.

A large sunflower bloom against a cloudy grey sky.

I definitely plan on trying to grow more sunflowers next year — red sunflowers and Teddy bear sunflowers will probably have to be included!
