Scapes galore

Late last year, I put my first real “rescue box” crop in the ground—garlic. It was also the very first crop I put into the ground upon moving to the farm. I swear, growing your own garlic is so much better than buying it at the store…

I had planted 24 cloves and most of them came up in late winter, after the new year. I think I’ll get 18-20 heads when it’s all said and done.

Harvesting garlic scapes is very easy and normally takes place in mid-May to early June. You just snip off a “leaf” or two from the healthiest, hardiest garlic plants. Don’t take too many from any one plant!

I’m looking forward to supplementing my fresh chives and now-fragrant oregano plants with some of these delicious garlicky greens.
