Autumn bounty in the dead of winter

    By Kat / January 2, 2023
A honeynut squash on a cutting board

Tonight’s farm joy was a honeynut squash, harvested in October, roasted slowly and stuffed with a sagey breakfast sausage, cranberries, apple, celery, and shallot. Spectacular side dish to nibble with popcorn chicken and veggie sticks. I could get used to eating squash like this.

    By Kat / December 3, 2022
A view from behind a woman using a typewriter sitting in a window, overlooking a field; by DALL-E 2

Well, according to the official NaNoWriMo website, I have been a member since 2004, which… whew. I had a lot of years of false starts before I “won” NaNo for the first time (that’s just reaching the 50k word mark on a brand new manuscript in 30 days — no real competition involved), but since 2010 I’ve won six times, and…

Halloween doesn’t have a corner on the squash-craft market. Thanksgiving gets its turn too. My friend A came by last Saturday and we spent a couple of…

    Reclaiming

    By Kat / September 4, 2022
A rectangular construction of boards, meant to be a raised garden bed

What I love most about living the farm life is constantly learning new things. Often it’s because I must — there’s some kind of emergency or need, and I have a knowledge gap to fill — but just as often, it’s serendipity. I peruse Pinterest and spot an article relevant to my interests, or I pick up a library book that just…
