During our first year here, I purchased and tried to grow rhubarb roots, but was unsuccessful. It may have had something to do with the fact that the company I purchased from was across the country, so whatever conditions that rhubarb was used to… were not my conditions here.
This year, a neighbor generously offered us an endless pile of rhubarb stalks from their yard… so I requested some divided roots, in the hopes they would have a higher chance of survival with a transplant.
Needless to say, this rhubarb clearly knows how to grow in this region, and it’s already taking off. I’m not working from roots that have been transplanted from another state, but a healthy plant from just down the road.
Now I just have to wait one season before I can harvest the stalks. I am already brainstorming different recipes for this delicious root…
