Spring is here!

There’s no question spring has arrived here on the farm. I counted fifteen robins at once in the pasture today, unbothered by the goats. And since we trimmed all the fruit trees (potentially for the first time in many, MANY years), they are now pushing growth like wild.

With the sun and warmer air, I’m starting to harden off some of my seedlings to get them stronger for transplanting in the coming weeks. So far, I’ve sent onions, strawberries, tree collards, and artichokes into the wild world (a.k.a. the small greenhouse).

Trays of seedlings are outside in a greenhouse to begin hardening off before spring.

I am SO ready to enjoy the fruits of my labor and the beauty of spring in my garden this week, since I’m off work for a few days and enjoying acting like a plant — sleeping too much, sitting in the dirt, and absorbing sunlight and water.

I hate adjusting to Daylight Savings, but I have to admit, the days immediately feel longer. I can see it in the prolific growth happening all over the yard and garden. From the first seedlings of something I’ve planted to the emergence of the perennials, there’s something new to see just about every few hours.

Irises are beginning to push out of the earth as spring makes the garden come to life.

There are an inordinate number of irises throughout the yard, thanks to our dear friend Will. His legacy blooms on!
